Pistorius violated basic firearms rules
Oscar Pistorius was aquitted of murder, firearms and legal experts in South Africa believe that, by his own account, the star athlete violated basic gun-handling regulations and exposed himself to a homicide charge by shooting into a closed door without knowing who was behind it. Particularly jarring for firearms instructors and legal experts is that Pistorius testified that he shot at a closed toilet door, fearing but not knowing for certain that a nighttime intruder was on the other side. Instead of an intruder, Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was in the toilet cubicle. Struck by three of four shots that Pistorius fired from a 9 mm pistol, she died within minutes. Prosecutors charged Pistorius with premeditated murder, saying the shooting followed an argument between the two. Pistorius said it was an accident. South Africa has stringent laws regulating the use of lethal force for self-protection. In order to get a permit to own a firearm, applicants must not only know those rules but must demonstrate proficiency with the weapon and knowledge of its safe handling, making it far tougher to legally own a gun in South Africa than many other countries where a mere background check suffices. The tough standards for legally acquiring a gun were instituted in part because of a wave of weapons purchases after the end of racist white rule in 1994, a former legal director in the South African police. Under South Africa's white-minority apartheid regime, gun owners often learned how to handle firearms during military service. Many of the new gun owners had little or no firearms training, which brought tragic results. Prospective gun owners must now take written exams that include questions on the law, have to show they can safely handle and shoot a gun and are required to hit a target the size of a glossy magazine in 10 of 10 shots from seven meters (23 feet). Oscar grabbed his 9 mm pistol from underneath my bed. On his way to the bathroom, he screamed words to the effect for him/them to get out of my house and for Reeva to phone the police. It was pitch-dark in the bedroom and he thought Reeva was in bed.

Rafeal Nadel is back but has rough start
After seven months away treating a left knee injury, Rafeal Nadel left many questions unanswered in his comeback tournament. The torn tendon in Nadal's left knee drew repeated questions. He said its better some days than others, and there's still pain. He's avoided surgery, and he says he's been told by doctors the soreness may linger for a few more weeks - even a few months. Not playing has hurt him in the way Nadel has played. After four or five tournament, he should be back into his usual form. I'd say this was the perfect time to play Rafael considering the confidence factor and everything. The loss was a reminder of what he already knew: returning to challenge the other three in tennis' top four - Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray will be slow and gritty. He wore a white bandage on the knee whenever he played, racing down plenty of loose balls and showing no signs of protecting the knee or, for that matter, his right knee, which has also been injured. Every day his knee improves and increases the confidence for him. He still feels pain in the knee some days, and that's something we hope and think will be improving week by week.

Rare 1865 baseball card sells for $92,000
The Brooklyn Atlantics were known as the first champions of baseball. They team was a founding club of the National Association of Baseball Players, a forerunner of today's
National League. The photograph mounted on a card, known as a carte de viste, is the only one of its kind known to exist, though the Library of Congress has a similar image made from a different negative. The baseball cards were considered one of the first baseball cards ever. It was unclear how many of the cards like the one of the Brooklyn Atlantics team were produced. The ball club had them printed and handed them out to fans and players, even those from opposing teams, because the Atlantics were so good at the time. It was impossible to predict what kind of price the card would fetch because of its rarity, but the winning bid would fall somewhere between $50,000 and $500,000. The most expensive baseball card ever is a 1909 Honus Wagner card, which sold for $2.8 million in 2007.Thursday, February 7, 2013
Lance Armstrong under investigation
Lance Armstrong under active criminal investigation against him for doping. "Birotte does not speak for the federal government as a whole" and that "agents are actively investigating Armstrong for obstruction, witness tampering and intimidation" according to ABC news. A source told ABC news that he "does not speak for the federal government as a whole." In 1999 he tested positive for cortisone but as a prescription which he claimed he used a cream containing corticosteroids to treat saddle sores. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. He also was banned for life from competing in triathlons and other sanctioned events. There is new investigation that will focus on alleged actions taken by Armstrong toward potential witnesses who could speak out against him. It won't be concerned with Armstrong's use of performance-enhancing drugs. He has ended his association with Livestrong. Recently Armstrong has indeed admitted to doping. Armstrong confessed that he used performance-enhancing drugs during much of his cycling career, admitting to using a cocktail of drugs, including testosterone, cortisone, human growth hormone and the blood booster EPO. He would spend the rest of his life trying to apologize to people and regain their trust.“There will be people who hear this and never forgive me,” he said. “I understand that.”

Alex Rodriguez's problems
Alex has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs. The allegation of him using performance-enhancing drugs he denies. Rodriguez hasn't played a full season since he was voted his third AL MVP award in 2007; he's out for at least the first half of this year following hip surgery on Jan. 16. Alex's story is “Alex is taking his wildest swing yet in his fight against steroid allegations: The Yankees and MLB are conspiring to push him out of the game. Sources say the embattled Yankee star is “scared” that bigger forces are at work to try to discredit him and sink his career … “He’s scared, because he thinks this is so unbelievably false, and he’s wondering who could be behind this … He thinks something could be going on larger than anyone might think.”Alex was once considered to break the homerun record which is held by Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds has also been accused for using performance-enhancing drugs and he was convicted on one charge of obstruction of justice for impeding a grand jury investigation into illegal steroid distribution. He had a 30-day sentence to be served at home. I think the league should crackdown and figure out the people that used performance-enhancing drugs. They should do this because it would make the game fair so the pitchers would not have to worry about giving up as many homeruns. I think the game of baseball should be more of a pitchers game than a hitter’s game.

Super bowl
The super bowl at first was very one sided but there was a blackout. The blackout provided a spark in the 49ers to comeback and almost wins the super bowl. The super bowl was very exciting and thrilling to watch. The blackout I believe made the super bowl a little better because it made you wonder what caused the blackout and why only half of the lights went out. Before the power outage the ravens were winning 28-6. Jacoby Jones returned a kickoff 108 yards 1 yard shy of breaking the record for the longest kickoff return for a touchdown. After the blackout the 49ers outscored the ravens 25-6. The controversial power outage in the super bowl that almost led to the 49ers victory. The power outage occurred after the half time show but the halftime show was not the cause of the blackout. The power outage lasted 34 minutes and allowed the 49ers to restart and change the direction of the game. If there was not a blackout I think the game would not be a close game. The reason for the power outage is unclear but there are some rumors. I think the power outage was because a 49ers fan got mad because their team was losing so they overloaded the generator to create a power outage.
